Helping the Teddy Bear Clinic
UPMC Bedford Memorial has
started a new program called the "Teddy Bear Clinic". The "Teddy Bear
Clinic" allows for every child, under the age of thirteen, receiving
In-patient / Out-patient surgery or treatment from the Emergency Room
to receive a bear upon their arrival. This bear can first be "treated"
by the nurses or doctors for any child that is visibly frightened and
overwhelmed by their whole experience. The bear is commonly used as a
"comfort blanket" by the children. It is estimated from past records
that UPMC Bedford Memorial will treat approximately 1200 such children
within the following year. |

How can I make a frightened child happy?
Become a sponsor. Our present
goal is to have local doctors, businesses, and individuals sponsor
these bears. The bear, wearing a t-shirt with the sponsors
advertisement, will accompany the child home. |
